The Program

The 2019 COMPASS Summer Fellows Program

The 2019 COMPASS program begins the last week of May and continues through mid July.

Compass Fellows are selected and funded by their college department.  The funding is determined by the college department and usually covers living expenses and travel.

COMPASS program coordinators assist in matching the COMPASS Fellow with an organization that fits the Fellow’s communication policy interest, and COMPASS works with both the Fellow and the host institution to develop a plan that fits both the needs of the COMPASS Fellow and the host institution.  Start and end dates for the work with the host institution are flexible and negotiated between the COMPASS Fellow and the host institution.

COMPASS Fellows are expected to participate in a weekly seminar on the practice of communication policy, and to produce a research paper that draws from the summer fellowship experience within 30 days of the end of the fellowship.  Many of the COMPASS final papers have been published in the International Journal of Communication.  The college department funding the COMPASS Fellow determines whether to award academic credit for participation in the COMPASS seminar.

This summer, the seminar “Communication and Policy Impact” will be taught by Christopher Ali, Assistant Professor of Media Studies at UVA.
